So, what is best line for spinnerbaits? For a complete beginner, mono would be the best option, however braided and fluoro work excellent too. You have to consider line visibility, strength, resistance to abrasion and color. All of that plays a major role in choosing the perfect one.

Choosing the right line can make or break your fishing experience. They all have different features, and you can really feel it on spinnerbaits as they create a lot of resistance while moving through the water.

Unfortunately, there is no line that will cover all options, and you will have to change it to maximize your success.

Braided vs Fluorocarbon vs Mono: What Line Type to Use for Spinnerbaits?

To determine what is the best line for spinnerbaits in given conditions, you have to know the difference. All have pros and cons in different situations.

MONO

Mono lines are cheapest, and easiest to use. If you are a complete beginner, this is the one for you. Tying knots and hooks is easy and you will be able to handle them comfortably.

Mono lines are made from single train of nylon and are less visible than braided under water. They are stretchy, which may present a problem upon big spinnerbait retrieval from a large distance. As a beginner, you will make shorter casts and target smaller fish with smaller spinnerbaits, so that won’t present a big problem.

This line is not as resistant to abrasion as some other types, however, if you avoid obstacles and thick covers, you will not damage it.

FLUORO

Fluoro lines are made from single strain of nylon too and are almost invisible under water. Beginners may have problems with tying knots, and it cost more.

This line type is very resistant and strong. You can use it in covers, or for larger fish. It is not very stretchy, and you can use it with larger spinnerbaits. It is more sensitive than mono and more suitable for distant casts as the stretch wont affect your lure handling in the water. This option is ideal for open water (line is almost invisible) and near cover (it is abrasion resistant).

BRAIDED

Braided lines are made from multiple strains of nylon, and that makes them very strong. Much smaller diameter of braided line is as strong as larger diameter mono lines.

The biggest downside is that these lines are highly visible. But they are not stretchy, and offer the largest degree of sensitivity. That is excellent for fishing in the weeds where you need fast lure control and where fish won’t be able to see the line.

Braided lines have good abrasion resistance so occasional obstacles in weeds won’t hurt them. As a beginner, you may have some difficulties with tying knots.

As you can see, all three types can be used for spinnerbaits, however, I would recommend to start with single strain of nylon like mono if you are unexperienced.

What Size [Pound Test] Line is Best for Spinnerbaits?

The best size line for spinnerbaits is the one that complements the reel and lure size. That is determined by the size of fish you are targeting.

What pound test line for spinnerbaits you will use depends on mentioned factors, plus the spinnerbait type. Spinnerbaits that create a lot of drag and you use them in covers should be paired with a bit heavier line than you would initially consider. The reason is that drag, and cover, may put a lot of pressure on the line and you may loose the lure.

Generally, 15-to-20-pound test for fluoro or mono is enough for majority of conditions you will encounter as a beginner. Some use less than 15, however, it increases the risk of line snaping in unpredicted circumstances. More than 20 may be a bit too strong. I personally prefer 17 for some general fishing experience.

If you are fishing with braided, you will have to go for stronger. Between 40 and 50 will work the best, however, some anglers go for even more if fishing in very harsh conditions and covers.

What Color Fishing Line is Best for Spinnerbaits?

When considering what line to use for spinnerbaits, you have to consider some other factors besides type and strength.

Fishing line color is the most important one. Different colors exist to make the line less visible to fish in various conditions. Different lines are used in crystal clear waters than in murky ones. Color and clarity of the water influence the line color choice, together with light conditions and water depth.

GREEN

Green is generally one of the best options as it fits many conditions. As long as the water has any green tint, this will work. You can use it in various water clarity conditions and various light. Only situation where it wont work is crystal clear waters.

TRANSPARENT

Transparent is excellent for very clear waters as fish won’t be able to see it. This line has the ability to reflect natural light in almost the same way as water, so it will “disappear” under the surface.

YELLOW

This color may work in murky water, but it is more suitable for the angler than the fish. If you are a complete beginner, go for yellow to see it and learn how to control it. Avoid clear water with these lines as fish won’t come near it.

BROWN

Very dark conditions and muddy water go well with brown lines; however, I don’t think that you will use spinnerbaits a lot in such conditions.

So, Which Line for Spinnerbaits Would I Recommend?

As you can see, the best fishing line for spinnerbaits is the one that is chosen to fit your specific fishing conditions.

But no matter the line type, line has to be quality made and dependable. And if it comes at a good price, that is the best! So, here are my favorites in all categories:

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Clear Mono

This line (#ad) is available in all sizes that you could possibly need for spinnerbaits. It is transparent and almost invisible in clear water.

It is a hybrid line that is made in a way that combines positive features of different line types. It has extremely low visibility, low memory, and it is very strong.

Tying knots is easy and beginners can handle it without problems. Low stretch (when compared to regular mono) makes it very sensitive and the feeling and control you have over your spinnerbait is excellent. It is durable and resistant.

When compared to classic fluoro, it is more stretchy so you may not want to use it with large spinnerbaits and long casts.

Seaguar Invizx 100% Fluorocarbon (15-Pound)

This 15-pound line (#ad) is perfect for fishing in waters with less cover and a bit smaller spinnerbaits. It is a fluoro line which has all the benefits of that line type.

Less stretch than mono or hybrid makes it excellent for lure control and sensitivity. Abrasion resistance is superb, and it is almost invisible in clear waters.

Knot strength is incredible, although it is a bit harder to tie them. This line sinks fast, and casting it is extremely easy due to soft coating.

This line can last for years if you take care of it right.

Sufix 832 Advanced Superline Braid

Braided lines may not be your first option for spinnerbaits, however, this one has many benefits (#ad).

Green color makes it less visible in almost all waters. Abrasion resistance and strength are excellent, and it is suitable for fishing in dense weeds and covers where lines can get damaged.

Even rough and prolonged use won’t break it. It is not fading a lot in the sun. Casting is easy and ad smooth.

It is available in various sizes, from 6 to 80 pound test, which offers you a range of possibilities.

SpiderWire Stealth Braid

And lastly, we have another braided line (#ad) which is available in various lengths and sizes to cover all your spinnerbait needs.

You can choose colors too, to either make it less visible o fish, or more visible to you.

This line in sensitive and strong, however, tying knots is quite hard if you don’t have previous experience with braided lines.

Although it may seem light, this line has excellent abrasion resistance, and you can use it anywhere without worrying that it will snap.

Casting is also great, and all together, this line has perfect performance.

Conclusion

Choosing the best line for spinnerbaits may seem hard, but if you consider specific fishing conditions and your experience, it is easy to decide what the best option is.

Although there is no “one line fits all” in any conditions, for a beginner I would recommend low stretch mono line, around 17 pound test, green color. It is an option that is most versatile among all, when used with spinnerbaits that don’t create much drag.

Keep in mind that you need a reel that can hold your chosen line, and when you make the perfect combo, you will see how it can positively affect your experience!
