SONAR is actually an abbreviation from Sound Navigation Ranging. A sonar device, which is in this case, a transducer mounted on the bottom of your boat, emits sound wave pulses.

These pulses travel through the water, and when they hit an obstacle, like a rock, vegetation, fish shoal or a bottom, they reflect and travel back towards the surface.

Devices that sent the pulses detect these reflections, and based on time that passed from emitting to receiving, can calculate the distance (in this case the depth) of an object.



The strength of a returning pulse depends on how hard the object that reflected it is. Rocks will cause harder reflection than a fish. Devices detect it and based on the information received can distinguish the objects.

How does a Fish Finder Transducer Work?

I already mentioned transducer, and its purpose, but how does a fish finder transducer work exactly?

Transducer it the most important part of the system. The display is there only to show you all the information that your transducer collected. As previously explained, it sends pulses and receives their reflection in order to identify the object which is then shown on the screen.

Depending on a type, it sends these pulses in a different way.

The 2D fish finders have round transducers that emit round signals which spread as they travel. They cover greater area, but with less detail.



Downscan transducers that come with downscan fish finders are rectangular and send pulses straight to the bottom. The result is a narrower, but highly detailed picture.

Sidescan fish finders emit pulses to the sides. The downside is that you have to move slower to get a detailed image. Covered area is large but not as detailed as with the downscan transducer.

All transducers have piezoelectric elements (e.g., ceramics) within them. These parts vibrate at and this vibration produces waves, i.e. pulses, that travel through water. Vibration occurs at a certain frequency, but I will tell you more about that later on.

When the signal is returned after it has been reflected, it gets converted into an electrical signal that travels into the main unit. The main unit software “reads” and “convers” these signals into pictures.

If you are in search of a fish finder, you are going to notice that CHIRP is one of the features mentioned.

So, what is chirp on a fish finder?

CHIRP is an abbreviation from Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse. In simple words, this technology works in a way that it emits more than one frequency pulses. It emits pulses ranging from low to high frequencies continuously.

Upon the signal return, the technology can interpret those signals. The result is a better, more detailed, and accurate picture on your display. I already mentioned that every underwater object reflects pulses differently, due to its hardness. By sending different frequencies, those differences in reflections are minimized, and the result is a better picture.



This range of frequencies enables more accurate information gathered at larger depths.

But it is not only for deep sea fishing. Anyone who is presenting their bait in depths greater than 10ft will notice a difference. Of course, this precision comes at a price.

I will not mention a lot of technical details, because you can find them on different manufacturers websites, but the thing I have to mention is reading the CHIRP sonar, or any other sonar you have.

Fish can be displayed as arches, and those arches can vary when the fish are on the move, and travel to through the pulses your transducer emits. These arches can have different shapes and sizes, and you will have to use your fish finder in various situations to get to know these signs.

Some other fish finders interpret these arches for you, and display fish icons. This feature is great for beginners who are still learning how to fish with the help of modern technology.

Do I Need GPS & Chartplotters on My Fish Finder?

GPS and Chartplotters are a great addition to any fish finder, however, you have to know that these come at a certain price.

But, before we get into that, I have to mention the difference between GPS and chartplotter.

GPS will inform you about your location, in terms of latitude and longitude. Chartplotters use a GPS location to show it on a map. This means that chartplotters can’t work without GPS, but GPS can work without chartplotters.

For example, when you are driving and using one of the popular fishing navigation apps, those apps are actually chatplotters. GPS is a technology within your navigation device that calculates your position. And this location is then transferred to a map.



Having these options on your fish finder can be beneficial but it is not something you can’t live without.

Knowing your exact position, and being able to mark it on a map will be useful if you want to “save” your favorite fishing spots for the next time. Some fish finders have the option of making your own charts of previously uncharted lakes. But, no one can guarantee that you will find your fish on the same spot next time.

Main unit can be installed anywhere you like, but the transducer has to be in a specific place. If installed incorrectly, it will show you low quality and inaccurate images.
